Summary:
Modernizes California's public-school curriculum to better prepare students for adulthood, careers, and civic life. Expands access to financial literacy, civic education, media literacy, and career and technical education while maintaining strong academic standards.
Ensures students graduate with practical skills alongside core subject knowledge. Requires equitable statewide access, educator support for implementation, and public reporting on program availability and outcomes.
Key Provisions:
- Establishes required instruction in financial literacy, including budgeting, taxes, credit, and student loans
- Strengths civic education, including government structure, voting rights, and democratic participation
- Expands media and digital literacy to address misinformation and online safety
- Increases access to career and technical education (CTE), apprenticeships, and vocational pathways
- Integrates real-world skills without reducing core academic instruction
- Provides curriculum resources and professional development for educators
Equity & Access:
- Requires statewide availability regardless of district resources
- Provides additional support to under-resourced schools
- Ensures curriculum updates do not depend on local funding capacity
Accountability & Oversight:
- Public reporting on course availability and student participation
- Regular review of curriculum effectiveness and relevance
- Oversight to ensure implantation aligns with educational standards
Intended Outcome:
- Students Graduate prepared for college, careers, and civic life
